Rusizi: School feeding programme in offing
on May 12th 2014
Under the ‘School feeding programme’, schools will serve lunch to pupils in 12 Year basic education in Rusizi district.
The initiative is to improve the quality of education, since when fed; students get to concentrate in class. Parents will contribute between Rwf8000 and Rwf10000 per month, to secure lunch for the students.
“With effect from May 30th 2014, day scholars in Rusizi district will start eating lunch from their respective schools,” revealed Basile Bayihiki, vice-mayor for social affairs, Rusizi district.
The decision comes after the recent government leadership retreat recommended an appropriate school feeding programme for learners aimed at improving the quality of education in the country.
The programme demands that on top of existing feeding interventions like the ‘One Child One Cup of Milk’ twice a week, schools across the country should provide meals to students daily. It also recommends an increase of micronutrients through enrichment of food materials to cater for all nutritional needs of the students.
The programme has already started in schools in Mururu, Nyakarenzo and Butare sectors of Rusizi district.
There are a total of about 41 basic education schools in Rusizi district.
