Kamonyi Teachers urged to encourage computer use

Teachers at Ruyenzi primary school have been urged to make use of laptops given under “one laptop per child” programme because they are essential in the children’s academic performance.

All lessons are programmed in the laptops but some teachers do not follow them while teaching the students. 

This was said on June 4th 2014 when Rwanda Education Board visited Ruyenzi primary school in Kamonyi district to see how students use computers while attending classes.

Ruyenzi primary school received 521 laptops in 2011. Apart from computer skills, students learn mathematics, English language and science for the student in class four, five and six.

“Laptops hold important information according to the school syllabus. Teachers should use them to better equip students with knowledge,” revealed Francois Rwasamirera, worker at Rwanda Education Board.

“It’s not about distributing many laptops. It’s about putting to use the available laptops to improve on education quality,” said Nkubito Bakuramutsa; National coordinator “One laptop per child”.

One laptop per child (OLP) is a key project that aims at the enhancement of education through the introduction of technology in primary schools. It also allows primary school students early access to computer skills and computer science understanding while expanding their knowledge on specific subjects like science, Mathematics, languages and social sciences through online research or content hosted on servers.

Under the project, at least 115, 135 laptops have been delivered in 226 schools- both public and private schools.

OLPC was launched in 2008.The whole initiative is to turn Rwanda into the technology hub from around the region to across Africa.

The OLPC project comes as part of the Rwanda’s Vision 2020, outlining plans for the nation to move from the humanitarian assistance phase associated with the 1994 genocide into one of sustainable development to become a middle-income country by the year 2020.
