Rwanda | Gakenke: parents should focus on their children’s education- Mayor

In the parents meeting at Nemba secondary school on Wednesday the 24th.Oct.2012, Zephyrin Ntakirutimana the vice mayor for social affairs of Gakenke district said that parents should be responsible and involved in their children’s education.

Rwanda | Gakenke parents shouldThe vice mayor said that parents put aside responsibility to the education of their children and leave them to their teachers yet parents should follow up on their children performance at school and their behaviours at home.

He explained that sometimes children miss schools to attend markets and are made to do hard work in the morning and in the evening instead of doing their homework.

Two students who study at Nemba II secondary school had beaten up their teacher in the last 2 weeks after tearing up their examination papers and were expelled and on the 23rd.Oct.2012 more 2 students of this school were caught with marijuana drugs.

Some parents in this meeting said that they are also beaten by their own children and some even don’t get to talk to them. They said that the conduct of their children is shaming and promised to get more involved in their children lives and especially in their education.

Parents wished to open up communication between them and their children’s teachers about the students’ behavior, conduct and performance at school.

In Gakenke district, about 40 young girls in schools were found pregnant promptly dropping out of school in 2011.
